Primitive Man - Caustic

Kev Rowland

I must be honest, I put this on, and after a few seconds I realised that I was smiling, and it stayed that way through all 77 minutes and 12 songs. If ever a band was producing music that lived up to their name then Denver-based Primitive Man are it. What we have here is raw nihilistic doom with nearly as many influences from primitive black metal as it does from the doom scene. The reason I was smiling as sometimes an album is released that cuts right through all the crap of what is expected, and a band just doesn’t give a shit if the establishment are going to like it, and instead are going to stay true to their roots and exactly what they want to do. That is very much the case here: it is raw, it is raucous, it doesn’t have a gentrified bone in its body, and consequently I love it! Despite their primeval, bludgeoning approach, Primitive Man wouldn’t exist without their savage awareness of modern humanity: simultaneously old and new, atavistic and ground breaking, they stand to redefine current conceptions of hope, faith, and metal music.
