The FB algorithm must be working overtime when it comes to my profile as yet again, I discovered a band talking about their new album. I determined to find out more which is now I am currently listening to the ninth album from Tacoma-based outfit Odd Logic. Their debut was released more than 20 years ago and was initially a one-man project of Sean Thompson, although there have been a few other musicians over the years, and these days is settled on Sean (guitar, bass, keyboards, vocals) and Pete Hanson (drums, gutterals).
This is prog metal with strong melodic influences and plenty of room within the arrangements, a drummer who understands his role is much more than just being a timekeeper, a multi-instrumentalist who very much creates a band feeling who can also sing, really sing. This never comes across as a project created by just two people, but feels much more like a band, and there is no doubt in my mind that they have been heavily influenced by Enchant in particular yet also bring in some strange downtuned elements which appear to me more akin to the likes of Protest the Hero. The result is an album which feels very clean, with nice space among the arrangements, and songs which are melodic yet crunch when the time is right.
It has been seven years since their last album, with Sean active in other projects as well, but I hope this is a rebirth for Odd Logic as this is really enjoyable and certainly worthy of discovery. Sean and Pete are very much of the old school in that they create music as there is an itch they have to scratch, and they really want people to hear what they do with no barriers, so make their music available free of charge! This is being released at the end of June and while there will be a limited run of CDs available the digital download is available free of charge, gratis. I am indeed glad that FB threw them my way as I have always felt my role within the scene is to shine a light on those who otherwise pass unnoticed, and that has been the case for these guys for way too long.
If you enjoy modern progressive rock which switches between prog metal and Neo, with the odd hint of Crossover, then these guys are definitely worth seeking out.
