Boysvoice - Boysvoice

Kev Rowland

ImageBoysvoice were a German Hard Rock band of the late 80’s/ early 90’s who released three albums during their career: ‘Boysvoice’ (1990), ‘Dirty Talks’ (1993) and ‘Serenity’ (2005). Their self-titled debut album (original released on EMI/ Electrola) is regarded as one of the commercially most successful albums from the early days of German Hard Rock and a rare collector’s item. It has been re-released on Yesterrock in co-operation with Universal Music Germany, and has been remastered by singer/ guitar player Mani Gruber. When I was listening to this in the car I actually had this pegged as being a slightly earlier release, and although I am not surprised that it is by a German act I actually had them in my mind as being from LA. Yes boys and girls, what we have here is hair metal – it is as if Poison were in the studio, mixing it up with Stryper and wishing that they were Motley Crue. To be honest, this isn’t bad. The music is very similar to what else was going on a few years earlier, and the guitars and vocals are really strong, but the reason why these guys aren’t a name I recognize is down more to the quality of the songs that anything else. Play the album and every time the listener will smile all the time it is on. But, by the time it ends you won’t remember a single song from it and therein lies a problem.

This just isn’t an album that people will want to seek out, but if you enjoy this style of music then it is something to keep an eye out for – even if it is just for one of the worst band names you have ever come across (repeated not only in the album title but also in a song!). And do you really need a song called “Happy Birthday”? Anyone?
