Reece, David - Compromise

Kev Rowland

ImageYes, for those with long memories, this is the same David Reece who was with Accept at the end of the Eighties and recorded ‘Eat to the Heat’. He has been in and out of the scene since then, with different bands, but has now released his debut album under his own name, and might fine it is too. To understand where he is coming from then there is no need to look any further than the rather superb cover of “Fortunate Son”. No, he isn’t doing anything dramatically different to it, but his bluesy Coverdale/Hughes/Gillan vocals does add a lot of breadth to it. This is an album where he really doesn’t doing anything wrong, and moves through blue collar music that is melodic and heavy and powerful all at the same time, but with his incredible vocals at the forefront of it all.

The band do a great job, really belting it out when they need to or providing a much more sympathetic ear when the need is there (such as on “Everything to Everyone”) but David is very much the star of the show. The big question here is how this guy isn’t a huge star, as he has a breadth and depth that many singers would kill for, and adds a touch of class to whatever he does. David is at home with a ballad suited to a smoky club, or a metallic monster aimed for the stadiums, and it is this that keeps me listening to the end, time and again. The songs may not always be the absolute top notch, but his vocals carries them through, and the result is an album that feels 100% honest and genuine, and brings a smile to the face of the listener. Superb.
