No-one could ever accuse these guys of not having ambition, as when they planned the follow-up to 2011’s ‘Moral & Wahnsinn’ they gave themselves 1000 days. The result is a double CD, which was released in May 2014, with one CD called ‘Tief’, and the other ‘Tiefer’ (translated to ‘Deep. Deeper’). In the Nineties, the band was primarily a death metal act, but now they have taken their inspiration from fellow Germans Rammstein, and have then mixed in some Disturbed. Now, this has gained them a lot of fans in their home country (where this album reached #22 in the national charts), but I’m not exactly a Rammstein fan and once walked out of a Disturbed gig to go and sit on a boulder outside the venue as it was more interesting than what was happening on the stage. So where does that leave me?
It is very clever, of that there is no doubt, and there is a great deal of variety within the twenty songs, although there is always a high degree of melody. There are some songs that folk metal fans could well enjoy, and others which are more technical, but I just can’t get away from the fact that they sound so much like Rammstein. I’ve played both albums a lot, but I still don’t like them, sorry. I’ve seen reviews where these have been given 9.5/10, but not by me. If you enjoy Rammstein, or already know DAR then you’ll probably enjoy these. They’re just not for me.
