Grave Siesta was founded in 2009 during a hiatus of the stoner band Rite, and on this their debut album which was recorded in 2011, they have added to the doom further influences such as the mighty Darkthrone and Celtic Frost as well as elements of thrash and sludge to create “seven songs of mean and unclean traditional doom metal, reminding us of the glory of Black Sabbath and Reverend Bizarre.” Um, right then. It has to be said that my views of the album aren’t quite the same as the record label. This reminds me very much of what some of the second division NWOBHM bands were pumping out more than thirty years ago. The sound is indeed raw, but is that really being seen as a selling point these days? Even if it were, there is no excuse for poor songs and poor vocals – if you are going to be over the top then you need to be able to deliver and that just doesn’t happen here. I have seen some great reviews for this album online, but I can’t bring myself to agree with those and instead can’t see myself ever playing this again.
