This Finnish band has been around for quite a while, but this is the first time that I have come across them. They started 15 years ago, and although they have released various EPs over the years their debut album ‘Under A Ton of Ice’ only came out in 2010, and this is the follow-up. While they are obviously heavily influenced by Sepultura, these guys have a very close affinity indeed with the likes of Sentenced and Katatonia with the latter obviously extremely important to them. They are heavy, and they can riff it up with the best of them, but there are times when the most prevalent feeling is that of melancholy, which definitely gives the music a certain flavour and piquancy. Given that they started the band as a channel for their anger, and certainly on songs such as “Dynamics of Pretending” that definitely still comes through, this shift in approach shows that while they may not have mellowed over the years they have certainly changed. “Kill For A Cure” starts life as almost a hardcore number, before both becoming far heavier and more emotional.
Whether this will gain them a larger international audience only waits to be seen, but this album shows a band that is much more than one dimensional and by bringing in Dan Swanö to mix the final result they have taken every opportunity to make themselves heard.
