‘Of Losing Interest’ was released in 2012 and I had to check that it wasn’t by yet another band using the same name as this is very different indeed to their previous album ‘Trails Out Of Gloom’. The band appear to have got the melancholy out of their system and have instead have channeled Serj Tankian and have produced an album that any fan of bands such as System of A Down, as well as Porcupine Tree, Muse and possibly even Queensryche will get a great deal from. There are some wonderful staccato guitar riffs on here, and it is much more in your face with loads of presence and attack which is combined with a melodic prog sensibility that is infectious and makes me want to smile everytime I play it.
The bassline is incredibly important, with that instrument often maintaining the melody to allow the guitar to go off and do something that is much more King Crimson in nature. I notice that singer /guitarist Doug Harrison remains from the last album, while guitarist Sam Levin (who played on all of their albums apart from the last one) has returned and they have been joined by newbies Jeff Caron (bass) and Nando Polesel (drums). Possibly the line-up change is the reason why they sound so different, but who cares? Go on, put on “Nice For Three Days” and enjoy the hard rock romp which is tempered by Sparks and 10CC. Superb stuff. As if it wasn’t confusing enough having two bands of the same name releasing albums, this one is so different to the last that it could be by yet another iteration, but take it from me it is definitely worthwhile doing a bit of research on this and grabbing a copy for yourself.
