Kadavar - Abra Kadavar

ImageHave a look at the album cover, go on, have a good look. Now check the calendar, yep it’s 2013, but somehow the image doesn’t fit with the year does it? Heads down for classic rock with more than a hint of doom from some guys who are doing their best to turn the clock back forty years and mix the Blacks (Sabbath and Widow) with Hawkwind, and adding dashes of Taste and Blue Cheer to create something that while very reminiscent of a time gone past is also very much of today. What we have here, ladies and gentlemen, is a trio of hard rocking longhairs who have produced an album that sounds as if they have gone into a studio, plugged in, recorded the output and then gone straight back out on the road which is where they belong.

Some trios believe that when they go into the studio they need to overdub plenty of guitars to ensure that they have a large sound, yet are of course then unable to reproduce that in a live environment. There is no issue with that here as Lupus Lindemann (vocals & guitar), Mammut (bass) and Tiger (drums) could well have been recording this in the Sixties where time was of the essence and recording ‘live’ was de rigeur. There is a real honesty about this album, it sounds as if it is of the time as opposed to some half-cocked homage, and consequently is a winner on all counts. Nine songs at 41 minutes long (so it fits on one side of a C90 tape, something that was very important when I was a teenager), this is something that cries out to be heard on vinyl as opposed to the download I have, as it just feels that this has no place in the digital age.

This is real rock music played by real musicians, and if you enjoy any of the above mentioned bands, or doom, or trios in general, or metal, in fact if you enjoy music in general then this is something that you really need to hear.
