According to the band’s website, Masteroid is a stoner-doom-sludge-metal band from Helsinki Finland who were founded in 2008. They originally sang in English but in 2011 switched to singing in their native Finnish so that they would feel more natural, as well as providing a point of originality. This is their debut album, and I am quite blown away that these guys have managed to produce something that really does sound as if it is a bastard child of Kyuss the very first time of trying. They switch between various moods, some slower than others, yet always maintains a crushing heaviness that is hard to define and explain. It is as if a great weight has been placed on the shoulders and the longer the album goes on the heavier it becomes.
I initially played this in the car while I was having a conversation so it was on at a very quiet level indeed but even at low volumes the class and power of this album comes through. The conversation soon stopped as I had to turn this up to more appropriate levels, and the louder I played it the better it got. The production on this is first rate, and to my ears is one of the top albums in this style that I have ever come across. Yes, it’s that good and I have no idea at all what they are singing about!! It doesn’t take long for the lack of English to not be a barrier and instead be something that adds yet another level to this wonderful album. This is definitely well worth discovering, so go to the label site for more details and how to get this,
