Scarlet Youth - The Everchanging View

ImageThis is the second album from this Finnish ‘shoegaze’ quintet, and I have just finished reading a review in the web which gives this 4.5/5 and contains the comment “I could listen to this album on repeat and never get tired of it”. I had to read the review a few times before I realised that she was in fact writing about the same album that I am currently listening to, as her words and the songs I am hearing are miles apart. For me this album pretty much sums up all that was wrong with the music scene in the Eighties. If there is a ‘live’ drummer then I am amazed as he does his very best to sound like a drum machine, and there is a singular lack of emotion in the whole piece as one song blands into another (and yes, that isn’t a typo).

Imagine The Cure and Pulp with all of the vitality crushed out of them and instead there is a monochromatic version in their place, and you might get an idea of what I think of this. Inverse Records have released some truly great albums in recent months – this isn’t one of them.
