Colloquio - L'entrata-L'uscita

Kev Rowland

ImageColloquio was formed by Gianni Pedretti at the beginning of the nineties, with the intention to explore music territories where electronic/new-wave sounds combine with the Italian songwriting tradition. He gained some interest with the release of some cassettes where he performed everything himself, and this lead to the release of the debut CD ‘...e lo spettacolo continua’, where he was joined Stefano Castrucci (guitars) and Matteo Mattioli (bass). The band released another album in 2001, and then Gianni was joined by Sergio Calzoni, from Act Noir, as sound-designer and producer. Together they released ‘Si Muove e Ride’, where the electronic elements moved towards glitch, ambient and industrial-noise territories.

It is these two who are back with the new album, which features several contributions by guest musicians, performing parts of sax, flute, double bass, drums and female vocals, while Gianni Pedretti provides the vocals and Sergio Calzoni the electronic arrangements In some ways it is strange that Eibon have released both is album and the one by The Blue Project at the same time as in many ways they are quite similar, so much so that one feels compelled to compare them. This album sung in Italian as opposed to English, so it isn’t as easy to get into, especially with the vocals being so important. Also, there is an impression here of threat and menace but it is very muted and somewhat boring at times, whereas on ‘Adrift’ it feels very real. Both are experimental and combine simplicity with complexity, but if I was to be playing just one of them for pure listening pleasure then it wouldn’t be this.
