Janel And Anthony - Where Is Home

Kev Rowland

ImageIn some ways Janel and Anthony are one of the most unusual bands I have ever come across, yet are also one of the most enthralling. Based in Washington DC, this instrumental duo bring together so many styles and structures that it is difficult to know where to begin. Janel is Janel Leppin, a conservatory trained cellist steeped in North Indian and Persian classical music, free improvisation and jazz while Anthony is Anthony Pirog, a guitarist who seems to be totally at home whatever music is being played. I think what has enthralled me with this album is how it can go from beautiful classically inspired call and response to Hindustani ragas, surf rock licks, to Appalachian laments and post-bop harmonies. Musically and sonically this is all over the map, refusing to sit in any particular style so that the only true response is to call this “progressive” as it truly is; although most prog fans would not think of this in the same context as Yes, but there again possibly it could sit with King Crimson or Magma?

This is their second album, following on from a self-released debut in 2006. Apparently they knew each other at high school but only started playing music together when they were at college. Both of these musicians have very broad musical backgrounds, and have both studied very different musical forms extensively (both have music degrees). Somehow they have managed to bring all of these strands together in one album that is invigorating and beautiful, simple yet hard to fathom, beguiling and entrancing yet also harsh and unforgiving. In many ways it is quite unlike anything I have ever heard, yet I am quite sure that I would very much like to hear more. Only for those with eclectic tastes, but if you are like me in that regard then rest assured the mainstream only music fans are missing out and this is essential.
