Orchid - The Zodiac Sessions

ImageFounded in 2006 with the sole intention of a bunch of buddies playing some rock music, things went pretty fast for San Francisco’s finest, Orchid. Their debut album, 2011’s ‘Capricorn’, created such a buzz that they were soon signed to Nuclear Blast, with whom they released several EP’s before their second album ‘The Mouths Of Madness’ which got to number 18 in the official German charts. Now they are back wit their third, looking to build on their reputation as one of the top acts in today’s vintage rock scene. Well, to say that they have achieved that is something of an understatement. This is the album that we would be looking to Black Sabbath and Black Widow to release if the year was 1970 and not 2013. This is how I think of both of those bands, much more than just a one trick act. This is music that manages to capture the feel of those days gone before, but it is much more than just a homage, this is the real deal.

Listen to some of the bass lines, or the Keith Moon-style drumming, let alone the mighty riffs and vocals, this is not someone wanting to recreate a musical style and emotions from days gone by, this is a band actually doing it. If someone listened to this without knowing that it was a new release, they would state that it had been released in the 1968-1971 period, no later, and would be stunned to understand that not only is this a new band, but they are American to boot! This is classic rock, UK style, yet one would never guess that from listening to these doom laden riffs and 70’s stylings. You can almost hear the flares of their jeans swishing as they record this. It is an incredible album, and one that needs to be investigated at all speed.
