Metropolis - Out Of Mind

Magdalena Grabias

ImageMetropolis was formed in 2011 in a town of Bury St Edmunds, UK and is currently the entity of 5 members: Chris Longman (known also from Clive Nolan's rock musical, "Alchemy") on vocals and keyboards, White on guitars, Pete Alexander on bass, Dan Alexander on drums and Johnny Boreham on keyboards. With their heavy guitar sounds, unique spacious mood and Steampunk look, the band quickly gained recognition and appreciation among audiences of the British alternative rock scene and soon became one of the most awaited acts at Steampunk festivals in the UK.

After several years of intensive touring, Metropolis released their debut album "Out Of Mind" in 2014. The album, divided into traditional Side A and Size B, consists of 13 songs, which capture a lot of the band's live energy and tells a musical story balancing on the verge of new wave, psychedelic rock and classic hard rock. Interesting heavy guitar parts combined with original melodies, keyboard and piano solos and exquisite vocal lines form a truly intriguing debut in a "retro-futuristic" style.

Whilst the whole album is undoubtedly a solid piece of music and a genuinely inspiring creation, there are a few compositions that attract attention more than the others (for both musical and lyrical reasons) and linger in the listener's head for a bit longer. These are "My Metropolis" (originally released in 2011 on the "Just Killing Time" EP), "Sirens", "New Ice Age", "Sentinel" and "Watchers”. The lyrical sphere  is another valuable element of the album. Each of the songs constitutes a philosophical statement and an interesting voice  in the ever current discussion on the affairs of the Earth and humanity. In short, the album is an ambitious must-have and a more than interesting item in a collection of any enthusiast of good 21st century alternative music. Refreshing and highly recommended!
