Final Coil - Persistence Of Memory

Kev Rowland

This is the debut album from Final Coil, although they have been around the UK underground metal scene for a few years now, and have previously released some EPs I’ve not come across. They have been described as progressive metal or post metal, and that their music would be appreciated by fans of Kings X, Alice In Chains, Kyrbgrinder or Tool. My poor much-abused ears are having some problems coming to the same conclusions, as while there is no doubt there is a heavy grunge element what they are doing, they are also stepping into Kyuss territory while also maintaining and emotional relevance that would fit with Muse.

But, while I may have some difficulty getting to grips with what exactly they sound like, I can say something with some clarity, namely this album is just plain boring. I kept waiting for them to wake up a bit and throw some enthusiasm into what they were performing, but it never happened. The songs soon started to blur into each other and instead of looking forward to what was next going to be offered I started to hope that the next song would be the last one. For me there isn’t enough atmosphere to be able to rely on an emotional connection, and not enough energy to make this a real rock album. To say the pace is pedestrian is something of an understatement. However, I do have to say that it has been well recorded and the production is excellent, so if this is your sort of thing then visit www.finalcoil.com, just don’t say you haven’t been warned.
