Polish band Half Light were formed in May 2009 when vocalist Krzysztof Janiszewski and keyboard player Peter Skrzypczyk decided to join forces, the line-up being completed by the addition of guitarist Krzysztof Marciniak. They describe their musical purpose as wishing to carry the listener into an intimate, warm, yet sometimes turbulent half light, where a man, lost in the contemporary, may find a hideout and discover himself. They do this by using electronic sounds and combining these with the natural vocals and subtle guitar so that the listener is moved between music that is very electronic and almost Kraftwerk/Pet Shop Boys in style and something that is far deeper with lots of jazz and prog tendencies.
This is their third album already so the guys haven’t been hanging around and it is extremely well polished indeed. Like many Polish bands these guys sing in English, and in many ways it is really accessible although probably at the end of the day just not quite to my style. For me the combination of electronic and pop (and of course an annoying drum machine) isn’t what I like to listen to, but conversely I can imagine this being very successful indeed in the current environment. It is all very good, but not for me.
