So what we have here are 27 songs by Jimmy Pitt (keys) and Marco Minnemann (drums) with assorted virtuoso musicians including Bill Bruce, Fountainhead, Joe McCroskey, Pete Pachio and Jeremy Barnes (all guitar) and Eddie Kohen, Cheikh Ndoye, Ray Riendeau, Jerry Twyford and Jeff Williams (all bass). This is progressive rock combining with jazz and fusion in a determined effort not to fit into any particular box and instead challenges pre-conceived perceptions of any particular genre. There is always the age old argument that there are in fact only two types of music, good and bad, and it doesn’t matter what the type of music it is, it can always be described by one of these two words.
This definitely falls into the former camp – the note density alone on this is just staggering and there are times when I can’t believe what I am hearing as the interplay between the different musicians is phenomenal. I wonder just how many times they had to capture the runs on “Envy Becomes A Motherfunker” to get them matched so well (yes, these guys have adopted the Zappa form of song titles – and some of these songs are only a minute long..). For any person interested in virtuoso musicianship and music that not only stretches boundaries but stamps all over them in hob-nailed boots then this is essential listening. Incredible.
