Monuments - Gnosis

ImageOut of the ashes of Fellsilent have come Monuments, who are taking Djent into new areas. Imagine Meshuggah mixing with Protest The Hero, adding some more bottom end brutality without losing any of their progressive metal tendencies and you may just understand where these guys are coming from. Apparently they started with two singers, but have now decided that it is better to have just one who can sing in a myriad of styles and while it took them a while to come across Matt Rose there is no doubt that he adds a great deal to the overall sound. The music is frantic and incredibly intense, with a staccato power that drives into the brain like a jackhammer. Sometimes Matt sings with melody and incredible breath control and range while at others he is 100% aggression and this definitely gives the music the vitality it deserves.

All of these guys are masters of their instruments and while the guitars, bass and drums often seem to be played by just one person as they are so tight, they each take their turn in the spotlight and apply a myriad of styles. While many will say that this is Djent, and that Monuments are just a Meshuggah clone, then they need to play this album and listen properly as here is music that is brutal at some times, strangely beautiful in others, yet at all times incredibly complex. And these guys are British to boot!!

This is one of the most complex yet also one of the most brutal and uncompromising albums I have come across this year, and I urge you to investigate Monuments as on the basis of this they are going to have a major part to play in the British metal scene.
