I know you’ve probably worked it out already, but this is the second album from the band fronted by Nathan James, who made a name for himself having sung for the multi-platinum selling Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Scorpions guitar legend Uli Jon Roth. The idea of the band is to bring back the classic feel of the Seventies, so it was recorded live in the studio with no overdubs or click tracks, and mixed by none other than Kevin Shirley, who said “The best British band I've seen since... I could say The Darkness, but I really mean Led Zeppelin.”
So, high praise indeed, and one can understand why Brian May described them as “a potent young Deep Purple”, although one would have to look at Mark 3 for that comparison to be correct, as with the bluesy swagger and feel to this album this is also classic Whitesnake or Bad Company territory in many ways. Not much in the way of slide guitar, but in Nathan they have a man who easily hits the higher Coverdale notes and moves way into Glenn Hughes territory. This certainly doesn’t come across as an album being released in 2017, apart from the production, as this is music that definitely belongs to the classic sounds of forty years ago.
The band are tight, with strong interaction and a great sound, but this album is all about Nathan James, and if you want to hear some classic rock vocals then look no further.
